Being Stateside: A Return to Writing

It’s been a while since I’ve written—a number of weeks in fact.  There are a couple posts that I left started but unfinished about the last days in the United Kingdom that I’ll put up, for but for now I thought a quick update of the last few weeks would be in order.

After finishing up at the University of Oxford on August 3 and saying goodbye to all of the wonderful new friends I’d made, I spent a few more days in Oxford and London, visiting old friends and seeing the sights.  I got the chance to watch War Horse, the musical, on the West End.  It was fabulous!  The story is good, but mostly you go for the puppets.  The horses are life-sized, and run by three people each.  The movements are so lifelike that you start to forget that they’re not living, breather animals.  I went with my friend who I have previously called my “Shakespeare friend”.  She worked with horses for a number of years, and she could predict what the horse would do next because their movements were so lifelike.  I’d invited the friends I was staying with (she’s a friend who went to law school with me, and he’s from London) to come as well, but he’d already been and she didn’t have an interest in it.
